Welcome to our website!
We appreciate you taking the time to find out about us and our school. I have led John Shelton Community Primary school since 2012, on a journey towards excellence that motivates me every day. At John Shelton Community Primary School, we aim to give our amazing pupils the very best. Our mission focuses children and adults on the high expectations we have of our school community. Our core values define our ‘personal excellence’ and are the backbone of the school, shaping our curriculum and pedagogy, and guiding our behaviours.
We want our curriculum to inspire children. It will enable them to be ambitious and meet their future needs ensuring they develop a lifelong love of learning. Our curriculum is designed to be broad and balanced, enabling children to link different areas and providing a depth of knowledge and understanding for them to draw on. Our pupils’ backgrounds, our culture and our climate for learning provide direction for the curriculum and these identified drivers underpin it:
- New Technology is the application of different resources to solve problems and extend our capabilities. Using different tools requires children to express what they know in different ways.
- Independence is when a child becomes less dependent on others for support with their learning. Personal independence boosts confidence and enables children to handle difficulties more effectively because they are more prepared to take actions and do things without having to wait for support or permission.
- Global Issues are any issue that adversely affects the global community and environment, such as; environmental issues, political crisis, social issues and economic crisis. Through discussion, debate and presentations we want children to broaden their horizons, develop the language skills and understand global issues which will affect them.
- Celebrating Diversity means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing and celebrating our individual differences. The concept of diversity encompasses community, acceptance and respect. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment.
Our curriculum is designed with these in mind. We are developing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects initially through Enterprise Projects and a Mastery Approach to the teaching of Mathematics across the school. This first Enterprise Project will be piloted in Y6 followed by Money Week and a Careers Afternoon this term.
John Shelton Community Primary School is an exciting place – and our best asset is our pupils. Buzzing with energy, they are at the heart of everything we do, and meeting their needs is our sole focus.
We are immensely proud of our school and hope you get a sense of what we are all about from this visit.
We always welcome ‘real’ visits too – do get in touch!
