Homework Guidance for Parents and Carers
Homework is an opportunity for you to share in your child’s learning and at John Shelton it is based around the current Theme that your child is learning about in school. The homework has been designed in order for your child to pursue their talents and interests and choose from a selection of different activities which are a combination of independent and/or adult supported tasks. Children should choose a task from all the areas of learning throughout the unit of work. They may need some guidance when choosing. Your child must choose one activity a week to complete either in their homework book or to be brought in if it is a model.
Every Friday, your child will bring home their homework book and it must be returned with the completed homework, the following Wednesday.
Your child will bring home a reading book and reading should be recorded in the reading journals. Ten minutes shared reading a night will support your child’s reading and enable them to practice skills they are being taught in school. Asking your child a variety of questions to ensure they understand the text will also help. Reading journals must be in school every day.
In order to develop a love for reading it is good for your child to read a range of different texts for example, newspapers, magazines, poetry and library books.
We also subscribe to an educational website called Reading Eggs which involves games and challenges to develop your child’s reading and spelling skills. Your child’s username and password will be stuck in their homework books.
Your children will also be asked to learn spellings weekly.
As well as Maths activities on your child’s Theme sheet, we also subscribe to TWO other websites called Mathletics and Times Tables Rock Stars. These are fun, interactive websites where your child can develop their maths skills, earn certificates and awards and have fun. Your child has their own login and teachers can see how much time your child has spent on the site and can check their progress. We would encourage the children to log in to Doodlemaths several times a week to complete activities set by their teachers which are matched to their ability. Their log in details will be stuck in the back of this book.
If you are unsure of anything please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher. They are available via the Class Dojo or at the end of most days.
