Pupil Premium
What is Pupil Premium?
John Shelton Primary School is committed to ensuring that every individual child achieves and excels, despite any disadvantage. The Government provides Pupil Premium funding, which is in addition to main school funding, to help address national inequalities between the achievements of children eligible for free school meals or children in care.
Is your child eligible?
Schools are given a pupil premium for:
- Children who have qualified for free school meals at any point in the past six years.
- Children who are or have been looked after under local authority care for more than one day.
- Children from service families who receive a child pension from the Ministry of Defence.
How is it spent?
At John Shelton Primary we utilise the Pupil Premium grant to support our children with a specific focus on Phonics, Reading, Nurture and Mentoring. This is done in small groups and on a 1:1 basis. We also provide financial support towards trips, residentials and uniform.
How to claim your child’s pupil premium
Parents with an annual income below £16,190 and who are in receipt of Child Tax Credit and Income Support but Do Not receive Working Tax Credit are eligible for Pupil Premium. Parents are required to complete a free school meal application form online. It is very important to apply even if you do not intend taking up the free school meals or have a child in Reception, Year 1 or 2 who is entitled to a free school meal as part of the Universal Free School Meal initiative. Obtaining entitlement to Pupil Premium will enable the school to apply for extra funding. This will be used to provide additional help for your child and will entitle you to other support such as subsidy towards school visits and residential trips. Please contact the school office for further help or advice. They will be very happy to help you apply.
